PURPOSE: An apparatus for controlling a drive amplifier in a mobile communication terminal and a method therefor are provided to decrease a consumption current and a noise level by classifying a strong electric field and a weak electric field and controlling the on/off of the drive amplifier on a transmission path according to the classified result. CONSTITUTION: A power control switch(230) is controlled according to a control signal which corresponds to an electric field strength(strong electric field and a weak electric field) and is generated from an MSM(Mobile Station Modem)(200) for blocking or maintaining a power supplied to a drive amplifier(250). A path controller(240) between an RF(Radio Frequency) SAW(Surface Acoustic Wave) filter(220) and the drive amplifier(250) to transmits a transmission signal outputted from the RF SAW filter(220) to the drive amplifier(250) or bypasses the drive amplifier(250) according to the control signal.
