PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify the wiring by reducing the number of control signal lines and to reduce the cost by reducing the number of terminals in an ignition device. SOLUTION: The multiple discharge type ignition device for an internal combustion engine comprises ignition coils 21 and 22 connected to a spark plug 3, a drive signal generating means 1 for outputting a drive signal of a lower level Vh1 corresponding to the ignition coil 21 and a drive signal of a high level Vh2 corresponding to the ignition coil 22 alternately, and an ignition coil drive control means 30. The ignition coil drive control means 30 makes the secondary coil of the ignition coil 21 generate a high voltage by carrying a current or breaking the connection to the primary coil of the ignition coil 21 according to the drive signal of the low level Vh1 and makes the secondary coil of the ignition coil 22 generate a high voltage by carrying a current or breaking the connection to the primary coil of the ignition coil 22 according to the drive signal of the high level Vh2. The high voltage V2 from the ignition coils 21 and 22 is multiply applied to the spark plug 3.
