Ratchet mechanism for imparting step-bystep rotary motion in either direction to a shaft 3 comprises a ratchet-wheel 4, secured to the shaft 3 and having teeth shaped substantially as isosceles triangles, and pivotally mounted pawls 11 located one each side of the ratchetwheel 4 and each carrying a spring-biased tongue 14 adapted to engage a tooth of the ratchetwheel near the apex of the tooth and to slide down the trailing flank of the tooth on operation of an appropriate solenoid 6, thereby to rotate the ratchet-wheel through one step. Each pawl 11 has an end 13 of inverted U-shape in which the tongue 14 is located, the tongue being pivotally mounted in a slot 16 and having a portion 15 to which a spring 17 is attached. Stop pins 19 limit rocking movements of the pawls 11. A spring detent 18 abuts the ratchetwheel 4. |
