A protector for a reel of fishing line, sewing thread or other filament, has lugs to fasten it to the reel flange. Each lug has a sloping surface which is forced over the edge of a flange to hold the protector in place, after which it can only be removed by inserting the tip of a knife or other tool into the slots provided to break off at least two of the lugs. A protector (D) for a reel (F) of fishing line, sewing thread or other filament, has a number of lugs e.g. at 120 degrees to one another to fasten it to the reel flange (I). Each lug has a sloping surface (A) which is forced over the edge of a flange to hold the protector in place, after which it can only be removed by inserting the tip of a knife or other tool into the slots provided to break off at least two of the lugs. The protector is made from a transparent plastic that allows the line on the reel to be viewed while it is still in place.
