The invention relates to an electromagnetic actuator comprising an armature that can be displaced back and forth between two electromagnets, whereby the position or speed of the armature is usually determined by a displacement sensor and the accuracy of the position or speed determination is dependent on the displacement sensor that is used. The aim of the novel method for determining the position or speed of the armature is to provide accurate results even when using inexpensive sensors. This is achieved by a neuronal network, which is trained in a learning phase using a reference signal that represents the exact position or speed course of the armature and using several input variables that represent current operating parameters of the internal combustion engine and which in an operational phase that follows the learning phase generates a measuring signal that corresponds to the position or speed course of the armature, from current input variables using the trained neuronal network. Said method is suitable for the electromagnetic control of gas exchange valves in internal combustion engines.
