The invention relates to a method for manipulating small amounts of liquid and/or particles contained therein, wherein at least two surface waves having essentially the same wavelength are transmitted in opposite directions towards each other in order to form a stationary wave so that at least one amount of liquid and/or particles contained therein can be concentrated in the region of one or several nodes of said stationary wave. The invention also relates to a device for manipulating small amounts of liquid and/or particles contained therein in order to carry out the inventive method, comprising a solid substrate with a surface and at least one pair of surface wave production devices which are disposed on the surface and which have directions of radiation which are oriented in a substantially opposite direction towards each other and which can produce surface waves having substantially the same wavelength in a region of the surface, said surface wave production devices being disposed in such a way that stationary surface waves are formed during the simultaneous operation thereof.
