The method involves determining positioning data of a endoprosthetic part of a central joint relative to the bones that form the central joint. In order to detect the position of the bones in the body, an outer articulation point is determined in that the bones are displaced around an outer joint located at the end of both bones away from the central joint. An articulation point is determined for each of both bones, in the region of the central joint. A characteristic direction for both bones is determined by interconnecting the thus detected two articulation points for each bone by a straight line, and the orientation of the endoprosthesis parts is determined relative to this characteristic direction.
