Carbon monoxide tolerant catalyst and electrode for a fuel cell

A CO-tolerant electrode suitable for use in a fuel cell is formed from a carbon supported, platinum dispersed, non-stoichiometric hydrogen tungsten bronze electrode catalyst. The electrode catalyst is capable of oxidizing CO at very low potentials, and is sequentially formed from stable precursors comprising (i) a stable tungsten oxide source of defined properties, and (ii) a support of platinum particles of defined properties dispersed on a carbon support, followed by reduction, which latter may be effected in a fuel cell.
