A variable-speed transmission for use in a power train of a motor vehicle comprising at least one fluid-operated clutch 201, 202 including a cylinder and a piston movable in a chamber of the cylinder. At least one fluid-operated actuator (304, 305, 306, 307, fig 8) at least one source of pressurised fluid, and means for cooling the at least one clutch 601a are also provided. Conduit means connect the source of pressurised fluid with the clutch and actuator. An adjustable slide valve 610 is installed in the conduit means, and includes a housing and a valve element 611 movable in the housing between a plurality of positions. A pilot valve 630 is provided to move the valving element to a first position in which the slide valve permits fluid to flow from the cylinder, and a second position in which the slide valve moves to establish a path for the flow of fluid to a pump 600 arranged to supply fluid to the cooling means. |
