PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve operability in a variable speed reproduction mode by a turning operator (jog wheel) in an audio data or video data editing device for reproducing and editing audio data or video data. SOLUTION: In this audio data or video data editing device provided with the jog wheel for instructing a reproduction direction and a reproducing speed and for reproducing and editing audio data or video data recorded on a recording medium, a turning direction and a turning speed of the jog wheel are detected, when the turning direction and the turning speed of the jog wheel are not detected regardless of the elapse of a predetermined period in the variable speed reproduction mode for reproducing the audio data or video data recorded on the recording medium in a reproduction direction and at a reproducing speed corresponding to the detected turning direction and turning speed, reproduction is stopped, but the length of the period is decided to be values that are different between the case of just after instructing reproduction stop and the case of being not just after instructing the reproduction stop. Concretely, the former case is decided to be shorter than the latter case.
