[Also in Divisions F2 and G1] A winch drive torque amplifier comprises a rotatable cylinder 13, Fig. 1, around which are wrapped flexible elements 15, 17. The portions of the elements which emerge from the cylinder with the direction of rotation pass around an input pulley 19 while the portions which emerge from the cylinder against the direction of rotation pass around an output pulley. The pulleys may continuously rotate or may have restricted motion but in either case rotation of the pulley 19 in either direction tightens one of the elements about the cylinder to give a corresponding amplified rotation to the pulley 21. In an application for amplifying sound a diaphragm is connected to a pivoted lever connecting the input flexible element portions of a first pair of flexible elements and a similar pivoted lever connects the output portions of another pair of flexible elements and is connected to a diaphragm. The cylinder is stepped with three different diameter portions around each of which is wrapped a pair of flexible elements connected to pivoted levers forming amplifier stages, the lever forming the output of one stage being connected with the pivoted lever forming the input of the next stage. In another embodiment, Figs. 4 and 8, a finned amplifier drum 91 is driven by a motor 89 with a speed control 129 and has flexible elements 95, 97, wrapped therearound and passing about idler pulley 99 and output pulley 101 which is fast with pulley 105 drawing an instrument pen slider 107 with cord 109. An input is fed to a summing amplifier 115 connected to a fixed coil 163. The moving coil is rigid with a rod 167 pivotally connected to a rocker 169 pivoted at 173 and carrying drums 175, 177 over which the flexible elements 95, 97 pass. According to the input signal the moving coil rocks the rocker 169 to move one or other of the elements 95, 97 into engagement with the periphery of a rotatable control drum 127 which pulls one or other of the elements about the amplifier drum 91 to give an output rotation to pulley 101 which in turn moves the slider 107. The slider contacts a feedback slide wire 119 which feeds a signal to the amplifier 115 so that when the feedback and input are balanced in the amplifier 115 the slide is at the correct position and no current is supplied to the transducer, the rocker 169 thus returning to its neutral position. |
