<p>A hand-portable spreader (10) blows particles, such as salt or sand, over and outdoor surface to increase friction. The spreader (10) has a grip (500) and accepts an extension cord (C) to power the blower motor (400). The motor (400) drives a vane impeller (327) mounted in a housing (320) and connected to a nozzle (340), similar to a leaf blower, but the intake to the impeller is arranged to suck up particles from a storage chamber (100). The air passes through the particles in the storage chamber (100) and then through an orifice (120), where the air stream velocity increases and particles are picked up and levitated up into a conduit (200) that passes to impeller (327). After passing through the impeller (327), the particles and air are ejected from a nozzle (340) to scatter the particles over a surface such as a street or sidewalk to melt ice and snow.</p> |
