PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which realizes high luminance and a small size. SOLUTION: In the structure having a liquid crystal panel in which image signals are applied on the liquid crystal by line-sequential scanning and having a surface light source disposed on the back face of the panel, an EL light emitting material is used for the surface light source. The EL light emitting material is divided into stripes and is driven to synchronize with the line-sequential scanning of the liquid crystal panel to emit light of specified colors in the respective divided regions.
