PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recorder producing a high quality image print by detecting the thickness of a recording medium and performing fixing at a temperature suitable for the detected thickness thereby making the ink receiving layer of the recording medium transparent appropriately. SOLUTION: In a fixing means 4 for making transparent the surface layer of a recording medium 1, thickness of the recording medium 1 is detected by a thickness sensor 45 and fixing is performed by controlling a heating roller 41 and a heating belt 43 to a temperature corresponding to the detected thickness. Since the ink receiving layer can be made transparent appropriately, a high quality image print can be produced regardless of the thickness of the recording medium.
