PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a glycosyl ceramide which is suitable for an analytical standard, can be obtained from a plant material and has a purity as high as 95% or more; and a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: A steryl glycoside can be obtained by solvent-extracting a sphingolipid fraction from a plant material, which is then refined and cooled to precipitate a steryl glycoside fraction followed by purifying. The glycosyl ceramide can be obtained by isolating a glycosyl ceramide fraction from the above supernatant, which is then purified by high-performance liquid chromatography and silica gel column chromatography. The glycosyl ceramide and the steryl glycoside thus obtained have a purity as high as 95% or more as measured by HPLC.
