PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a thermoplastic polyimide in which production efficiency such as volume efficiency is improved. SOLUTION: This method for producing the thermoplastic polyimide having a repeating unit represented by chemical formula (1) is characterized in that the method is constituted of a first step (a liquid phase reaction step) for producing a polyimide prepolymer by carrying out a liquid phase reaction of a raw material mixture comprising (1) a diamine component represented by chemical formula (2), (2) a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride represented by chemical formula (3) and (3) a dicarboxylic acid anhydride represented by chemical formula (4) as a terminal blocking agent in an organic solvent, a second step (a drying step) for producing a solid phase polyimide prepolymer by removing the organic solvent from the polyimide prepolymer obtained in the foregoing step, and a third step (a solid phase reaction step) for producing the solid phase thermoplastic polyimide having a weight average molecular weight larger than that of the polyimide prepolymer by carrying out a solid phase reaction of the solid polyimide prepolymer obtained in the foregoing step.
