PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-swelling rubber retaining its water-absorptivity and swelling tendency stably for a long period even if contacted with an aqueous solution containing polyvalent metal ions such as hard water or seawater, good in rubber elasticity and shape retainability even after the water absorption/ swollen, and slight in elution of components into the aqueous solution, and useful as a water stopping material for civil engineering or building engineering works. SOLUTION: This water-swelling rubber is characterized by being obtained by compounding (A) a water-absorbing resin formed by reaction between a poly-acidic amino acid anhydride having in the molecule at least one ethylenic unsaturated bond and an ethylenic unsaturated compound and (B) a rubber.
