PURPOSE: Provided are a cathode active material capable of obtaining a large discharge capacity and a good discharge rate characteristics, and a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery comprising a cathode containing the particular cathode active material. CONSTITUTION: The non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery, comprises a cathode(2) containing a cathode active material containing a lithium-containing composite metal oxide; a anode(6); and a non-aqueous electrolyte; wherein the lithium-containing composite metal oxide has a composition represented by formula: LiMgxM1-xPO4 wherein M is at least one kind of an element selected from the group consisting of Co and Ni, and the molar ratio x is larger than 0.5 and smaller than 0.75.
