PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for safely and efficiently cleaning both soil and groundwater polluted with a volatile organic chlorine compound such as tetrachloroethylene or trichloroethylene at the site without diffusing the pollutant gas into the atmosphere. SOLUTION: This method comprises driving a quick lime pile (5) into the ground (1) polluted with a volatile pollutant, sealably laying an air-tight sheet (7) over the ground surface of the pile (5) to form an air-tight space, diminishing the pressure in the space, and allowing the pile (5) to adsorb the pollutant gas volatilized by the exothermic reaction of the pile (5) with soil water.
