PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decompose a water repellent material of a gas diffusion layer by a noble metal catalyst and thereby prevent deterioration of water repellency, in a polymer electrolyte fuel cell provided with electrodes each comprising the gas diffusion layer and a catalyst layer containing noble metal catalyst. SOLUTION: In this polymer electrolyte fuel cell, at least the gas diffusion layer of one of the electrodes in undergone a water repellent treatment, and a water repellency deterioration preventing layer containing a conductive material is formed between the gas diffusion layer and the catalyst layer.
