PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light, compact eddy current speed reducer by multi- polarizing the electromagnets. SOLUTION: A brake disk 2 is linked to a rotating shaft 1 and a static magnet support ring 6 made of nonmagnetic material is opposed to the brake disk 2. The magnet support ring 6 is provided with a plurality of electromagnets 8 arranged apart with a prescribed distance along the circumference of the magnet support ring in such a way that the axis of a coil 8b wound around a core 8 of each electromagnet 8 is in the same direction as that of the circumference of the magnet support ring 6, wherein each electromagnet 8 is provided with magnetic pole strips 8c, 8c on both ends so that the magnetic pole strips are opposed to the brake disk 3. When the electromagnet 8 is energized, each magnetic pole strips 8c, 8c emit lines of magnetic force, which generate eddy current in the brake disk 3, resulting in braking force on the rotating shaft 1.
