PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display system avoiding additional cost required to provide a device with touch screen technology, without needing a separate independent user input key. SOLUTION: A portable hand-held device such as a camera is provided. The device is provided with a functional unit and a related electronic control system. The control system comprises a flat panel display 103 for providing a visual display used for controlling the functional unit. The electronic control system also comprises switch platforms 201-204 mounted to detect a touch near the periphery of the display and to provide a plurality of separate output signals (signals for respectively showing the parts where the touch is detected out of the periphery). A user operates the switch by touching the display so as to move a cursor through an item displayed on the display, thus allowing navigation through visual information on the display.
