PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recognize halftone dot images in a wide range without erroneously detecting a character region. SOLUTION: This halftone region detector detects peak pixels (high peak or low peak) (2), detects the density (4), corrects the detection result (6), and then outputs the upper halftone level, whereas it detects halftone dots (3), detect the density (5), corrects the detection result (7), and then outputs the lower halftone level (8).
