PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light scattering type liquid crystal device obtaining high liquid crystal display contrast and low driving voltage characteristics with use of various liquid crystals and transparent solid substances and without depending on properties of the used liquid crystals and of the transparent solid substances forming three- dimensional network structure, and to provide a method for manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the light scattering type liquid crystal device having two sheets of substrates, each of which has an electrode layer and at least one of which is transparent, and a light controlling layer held between the substrates is characterized by impregnating voids of the light controlling layer formed with the three-dimensional network structure composed of the transparent solid substance with a homogeneous mixture of the liquid crystal and a transparent substance and subsequently phase separating the mixture, or by impregnating the voids with a homogeneous mixture of the liquid crystal and a polymerizable composition and subsequently phase separating the mixture by polymerizing the polymerizable composition, or by polymerizing the composition subsequent to phase separation or by concurrently advancing the polymerization and the phase separation. The light scattering type liquid crystal device is obtained by the method.
