PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a secondary or tertiary amine compound by reacting a primary or secondary amine with a halogen compound, by which the secondary or tertiary amine compound can be produced in en hanced tar-production prevention and high reactivity in an improved yield. SOLUTION: This method for producing the secondary or tertiary amine compound comprises reacting the primary or secondary amine with the halogen compound in the coexistence of an imidazolidium salt of the general formula A or B (R1 to R6 are each independently identically or differentially H or a 1 to 20C hydrocarbon group; and X is Cl, Br or I) and a group VIII noble metal catalyst.
