PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymer having a high heat resistance and hardly exhibiting coloration; a heat-resistant resin composition prepared by compounding the copolymer with a rubber-reinforced styrene resin and excellent in impact resistance and moldability and also in clarity; and a molded item prepared from the same. SOLUTION: This copolymer consists of unsaturated carboxylic acid units, unsaturated alkyl carboxylate units, glutaric anhydride units represented by formula (1) (wherein R<1> and R<2> are each H or a 1-5C alkyl), and, if necessary, other monomer units. The copolymer contains the unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer units in a content of 2,000 ppm or lower and hence is excellent in heat resistance, hardly exhibiting coloration.
