<p>A process for producing a 3-oxo-2-(2-thiazolyl)propanenitrile useful as an intermediate for agricultural chemicals, medicines, etc., especially as an intermediate for an acrylonitrile derivative which is an active ingredient for insecticides or acaricides. Provided are: a novel compound represented by the formula (2); a process for producing the compound (2) which comprises reacting a compound represented by the formula (3) with a compound represented by the formula (4); and a process for producing a compound represented by the formula (1) which comprises causing ammonia to act on the compound (2). (In the formulae, Z represents nitro, cyano, etc.; Y represents halogeno, C1-6 alkyl, etc.; R represents hydrogen, C1-6 alkyl, etc.; X represents halogeno; and n and m each independently is an integer of 0 to 5.)
