Process for the production of phenol and acetone containing low levels of cresol by acid catalyzed cleavage of cumene hydroperoxide via the Hock process, comprises heating the acid cleavage product to greater than 80 deg C for upto 15 minutes such that the dicumylperoxide content in the cleavage product following heating is no greater than 0.5 wt.%.
