PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus for obtaining a superior image during the reading of a transparency, by detecting flaw and dust on the transpar ency and compensating the image. SOLUTION: In the image reading apparatus for reading a manuscript, a manuscript illumination system includes a first light source for emitting light at least in a visible region, a second light source for emitting light in an non- visible region, and a light guiding plate having first and second light guiding patterns for guiding the light to the whole illuminating plane while the light sources are mounted on the edge face.
