PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting the edge part of a new color image, by which a line image edge of a character with low contrast can be detected highly precisely. SOLUTION: In this method, an edge is extracted by using two color signals (G signal, R signal) to which color separation is performed for a color original by a first edge detecting part 103 for one color signal (G signal) and a second edge detecting part 104 for the other color signal (R signal). Different MTS compensation processings are performed to the two color signals. Detection output of the second edge processing part 104 is validated in the main scan direction and the sub-scan direction in the vicinity of a pixel by which the edge is detected by a validation signal generating part 127.
