<p>An encoded binder strip (30) having an adhesive matrix (12A and 12B) and an encoded pattern (Fig. 3) formed on a surface of the matrix to identify the type of binder strip (30). The encoded pattern includes relatively high reflectivity regions (L2) and relatively low reflectivity regions (L1). Preferably, the encoded pattern is read (34A and 34B) as the binder strip is fed into a binding machine (18), with the encoded pattern controlling operation of the machine.</p> |
