The method involves determining the position of a character within the second character string that corresponds to a character in the first character string in accordance with a predetermined criterion, and storing it in the character register for the first character string. A conversion cost value is determined for each character of the first string and stored in the corresponding conversion cost register. The similarity of the character of the first string to the corresponding character of the second string is described with the conversion cost value.
