Producing a molding comprises irradiating a liquid material in a bath, to solidify the material. At least part of the molding (24) is formed by selectively increasing the radiation concentration in the bath volume, according to geometric data, especially the conditions for a multi photon absorption process. The radiation source is a laser, especially a titanium sapphire laser. Optical elements are used to focus the beam relative to the bath (12), and beam deflecting elements are controlled relative to the bath. The container that holds the bath is moved relative to the focus. The laser is a mode coupled laser.
