A motor-generator comprises a rotor in the form of a homopolar permanent magnet (3, 5) and a stator which includes a hollow cylinder bearing a coiled conductor (7) located coaxially within the field of the magnet. The conductor comprises a track of alternating first and second conductive portions (11, 12) the first portions (11) comprising a number of identical linear conductive strips connected in parallel, and the second portions (12) comprising single linear conductive strips connected in series with the first conductive portion via respective connecting strips (13) which are positioned such that the current path runs alternately in opposite directions. The stator also includes three blocks of ferromagnetic material (9) positioned so as to concentrate the flux from the permanent magnet (3, 5) in the regions of the first conductive portions (11) of the coiled conductor (7). In an alternative arrangement, high-permeability magnetic insulators are placed on the inside and outside of the coiled conductor so as to shield the second conductive portions from the magnetic field, causing the electromagnetic interaction between the current flowing in the first conductive portions (11) and the magnetic field to be substantially greater than that between the current flowing in the opposite direction in the second conductive portions (12) and the magnetic field, resulting in effective motor-generator action. In a further arrangement, the stator is in the form of a helix located within a magnetic field which extends in an axial direction.
