The temporary safety space for a building lift shaft has an actuating rod (2a, 2c) attached to the floor and ceiling for the lift shaft. The rods engage switches when the cabin comes into close proximity with the floor or ceiling. The switches are mounted on the cabin frame or wall to actuate locks, which stop cabin movement at a fixed distance from the floor or wall.
