Furnace for the heating of the ends of longitudinal workpieces consists of a wheel mounted furnace housing fitted with a cooled apertures which match the cross-sectional configuration of the workpieces to be heat treated. The apertures are pref formed by interchangeable water cooled sleeves set into the end face of the furnace, which is rolled over the workpieces. The absence of an significant gaps reduces heat losses.
