PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of shortening time to recover from a power saving mode, by shortening the time for controlling black and white levels. SOLUTION: In the image reader, provided with a function for controlling the black and white levels of image data read by a CCD, this reader is equipped with a means (step 2) for taking samples and saving the black level, when moving to the power saving mode and means (steps 5-8) for taking samples of the black level, when recovering from the power saving mode and deciding whether the black level is to be controlled, when recovering by comparing that sampled value with the saved value.
