PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical information recording and reproducing method having an aptitude for recording, reproduction and erasure by a short wavelength laser beam having <=600 nm wavelength and giving high density and high sensitivity. SOLUTION: The optical information recording and reproducing method by which information is recorded onto and reproduced from an optical recording medium wherein a recording layer containing metal chalcogenide nano particles modified by an adsorptive compound and having 1-20 nm average particle size is provided on a substrate is characterized in that recording and reproduction are performed after initialization is performed using a laser initialization device.
