PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a non-aqueous electrolyte that does not give an adverse effect to the characteristics under the normal usage condition and can improve safety at the time of over-charge of the battery, and further that does not have a problem of irritating smell and is safe, and a secondary battery. SOLUTION: In the non-aqueous electrolyte which contains a non-aqueous organic solvent and lithium salt, 0.001-0.18 mmol/g of orthoester is contained in the non-aqueous electrolyte.
