PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that a magneto-resistive(MR) type reproducing head has a defect that its wear resistance is inferior since the quality of the material and the structure of the head is different from the conventional head due to its characteristics, even though the magnetic recording system using highly sensitive magneto-resistive reproducing heads for dealing with a trend toward higher recording density are begun to be devised and put into practical use to provide a magnetic recording medium having low head wear characteristics and excellent running durability which can be applied to the MR type head. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium 1 formed by providing, if necessary, a lower layer nonrecording layer 3 on nonmagnetic substrate 2 and a magnetic layer 4 wherein ferromagnetic powder is dispersed in a bonding agent on the lower layer nonrecording layer 3, the magnetic layer 4 satisfies the relation 0.03<=Ps/Pall<=0.15, where Ps is the area occupied by protrusion parts having >=0.01μm height from the average center face of the surface and Pall is the measurement area.
