The discriminator has a semiconductor laser (1), receiving the modulation signal at its control input and providing a polarised intensity modulated optical signal at its output. The optical signal is fed along two parallel paths (3a,3b) of differing length, with a 90 degree polarisation rotater (4) in one path, or positive and negative 45 degree polarisation rotaters in the respective paths. The outputs from both paths are fed to a semiconductor photodiode (5) acting as a detector.
