1355177 Washing machines HOOVER Ltd 19 April 1971 [2 March 1970 23 Feb 1971] 9844/70 and 58087/73 Divided out of 1355177 Heading D1A [Also in Divisions F2 and F4] In washing and/or centrifugal hydro-extraction machine comprising a basket rotatable about a horizontal axis within a tub 12 which is supported from below from an outer frame 10 by at least two helical springs, one, 36, at least one of the springs surrounding tamper unit including a strut 35 which is secured at one end to either the tub or frame and at the other end extends through a single universal joint 64 which permits limited unrestricted pivoting relative to the frame or tub, the universal joint which has a part-spherical surface 66 engaging a corresponding surface 65 of the bracket 51 provides friction-damping by virtue of the member 64 having at least one lengthwise split so that the spring 36 and the concave surface 65 act to cause the split member 64 to embrace the strut 35. The member 64 has an extension 70 to prevent the end of the strut from leaving the aperture in the bracket 51 due to unbalance of the basket. The strut 81, (Fig. 3), has a part spherical joint at its lower end and at its upper end passes through a mounting 100 which permits only movement of the strut in a plane perpendicular to the basket rotational axis and comprises a member 105 which is slidable on the strut 81 and has flat surfaces 104 and frusto-conical surfaces 106, 107 slidable relative to complementary metal surfaces of two guide parts 112, 113 disposed within a pyramidal rubber block 119 which is received within a bracket 102 of the tub. The tub has on top a bracket 141 which is connected by two tension springs 140 to the back and front of the cabinet to further locate it. A concrete inertia mass 121 is provided at the front bottom of the tub with its CG below the outer surface of the tub.
