Production of a cylinder block (1) of an I.C. engine comprises setting a parameter set for the block, forming a block corresponding to the parameter set, determining a first and a second build-up welding section along the cylinder of the block corresponding to the pressure and the counter pressure direction, performing build up welding on the sections, and final processing the block so that the surface of the cylinder has a wear-resistant layer. Independent claims are also included for alternative methods for the production of a cylinder block. Preferred Features: The first build up welding section is a first region symmetrically directed toward the pressure direction and the second build up welding section is a second region symmetrically directed toward the counter pressure direction.
