When data from an optical recording medium is demodulated, the data demodulation rate is variable in accordance with a reproduction state. Thus, it is possible to maintain a preferable read performance and reduce power consumption. As means for demodulating digital data from the optical recording medium, there are provided channel rate processing data demodulation means (13a) for performing data demodulation by using a channel bit frequency, half rate processing data demodulation means (13b) for performing data demodulation by using half of the channel bit frequency, and processing rate switching means (14) for switching the processing rate for data demodulation. In accordance with a reproduction signal quality, the data demodulation means (13a) and (13b) are switched from one to another, thereby reproducing digital data recorded on the optical recording medium.
