1304665 Unsaturated nitriles BADGER CO Inc 19 April 1971 [22 May 1970] 26172/71 Heading C2C Unsaturated nitriles, e.g. acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile, are prepared by reacting an unsaturated olefin e.g. propylene or isobutylene, with ammonia and oxygen in a reactor containing a fluidized bed of an oixdation catalyst and characterized by having at least two serially - connected catalyst - containing zones with one being a catalyst regeneration zone and the other being a reaction zone located downstream of said regeneration zone, the oxygen and at least 3% of the total ammonia being introduced into the regeneration zone and the olefin together with any remaining ammonia being introduced into the reaction zone maintained at an elevated temperature and pressure, passing the olefin, ammonia and oxygen through the reaction zone and recovering the unsaturated nitrile produced.
