PURPOSE: A metal surface treating agent and a surface-treated metal material treated with the treating agent are provided to improve the moisture resistance and the exfoliation property of a film by enhancing the press molding processability of a metal material. CONSTITUTION: The metal surface treating agent comprises a copolymer containing styrene and a vinyl compound having a carboxylic group copolymerizable with the styrene in the mass ratio of 1:9 to 9:1 as an essential monomer; and 2-30 wt% of a lubricant. The content of styrene and the vinyl compound is 30-100 wt% in the copolymer. Preferably the lubricant is at least one selected from the group consisting of paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, polyethylene wax and polypropylene wax. Preferably the copolymer has a glass transition temperature of 75 deg.C or more.
