PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-cost cylinder equipped with lubricant retaining grooves capable of reducing blow-through of a lubricant and generation of a blowby gas, establishing an excellent lubricating function in the sliding region, and enhancing the piston output. SOLUTION: The cylinder equipped with lubricant retaining grooves has a sliding surface 2 with which a plurality of piston rings 6, 6 fitted on a piston 4 reciprocating in a cylinder bore 1a are in slide contact, and the sliding surface 2 is furnished with wavy lubricant retaining grooves 3A arranged at a certain spacing in the axial direction P of the cylinder bore 1a and supplying the lubricant to the sliding region between the piston rings 6, 6 and the sliding surface 2, wherein the width of wave form h1 of the grooves 3A is made smaller than the pitch h2 of the piston rings 6, 6.
