PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inverted microscope system which can flexibly deal with various applications. SOLUTION: In the inverted microscope system, models for different applications are constituted by combining, as additional units, at least an illumination means having a light source device 18 to generate illumination light for an observation sample 2 and an additional unit 24 having a lens barrel 26 to observe the intermediate image of the observation specimen 2, with a lens body 1 which has, as basic functions, a primary image forming optical system which has an imaging lens 6 to form the intermediate image of the observation sample 2 in cooperation with an object lens 4 placed oppositely to the observation sample 2 and a focusing means which changes the relative distance between the observation sample 2 and the object lens 4 to image the intermediate image of the observation sample at a prescribed position.
