PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a driving method for a liquid crystal element by which temperature compensation can be performed while the two problems of both the reduction of screen rewriting speed in a low temperature area and the acceleration of data transferring speed of a driver in a high temperature area are compatibly solved and to obtain a liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: In the driving method wherein a liquid crystal showing a cholesteric phase is matrix-driven, a reset period Trs, a selection period Ts, a retention period Trt and an indication period Ti are included and the selection period Ts consists of a selection pulse applying period Tsp and a prior selection period Tsz and a post selection period Tsz' positioned before and after the selection pulse applying period Tsp. The ratio of the selection pulse applying period Tsp to the selection period Ts is changed in accordance with environmental temperature to compensate the dependence of the responsiveness of the liquid crystal on the temperature.
