23443-468 A one-step process for the preparation of alkyl glycosides and alkyl polyglycosides from a saccharide and an alcohol having 12 to 20 carbon atoms is disclosed. The process comprises reacting the saccharide and the alcohol in a molar ratio of from 1:5 to 1:10, in the presence of an acid catalyst, sodium hypophosphite and up to about 1.3% of water, relative to the total of saccharide and alcohol. After the reaction is completed, the reaction mixture is neutralized with a solution of an alkali metal hydroxide in an alcohol having 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The product so obtained are only pale-coloured compared with products prepared by known processes and may be used directly for preparing cosmetics and detergent compositions.
